Post bench lathes/polishing wheels
I need to quote for a bench lathe to use for polishing polymer for a group I am teaching. I've finally been able to track down a small foredom bench lathe similar to the one I have and just about died at the price...$429

I bought mine secondhand a few years ago and paid less than half that.

Can anyone recommend a variable speed polishing machine? What do you guys use to polish up your polymer? I need to find a cheaper one for the group I'm quoting for and if possible, before Monday.

Reeeeeally appreciate your help here...

Hi Mel,

I use a handheld Dremel 300 series . It is variable speed.
I bought it from Bunnings 2 years ago for $99.
I make the polishing "circles" for it from the yellow felt-like cleaning cloth you get from the supermarket-?Vileda brand.
I find the Dremel does a really good job of polishing with minimal effort (just as I like it!)

cheers
Zarina

Here's one http://prairiecraft.com/polyclay/F.html price in USD, not sure about shipping cost and transformer. But the price seems to sound OK considering recent foreign exchange rates.
I have no idea whether these bench grinders are adaptable - I have not studied this kind of stuff yet.

The one you are looking at is for people who charge $450 per 3/4 hr service - not us mere mortals. LOL Have just had a few sessions, could count the dollars by my pulse beat

I too use a dremel Mel. I really like my one but I must say I hate parting with my buffing attachments once they get old!! I wear them in and they work beautifully but when they are brand new I find that I have to be really careful not to take chunks out of my beads. Perhaps thats just me though! You do get a lovely finish with them though.

I bought a 6" bench grinder with buffing wheel, etc. for something like $130 (can't remember exact amount), it does the job very nicely but is only one speed.

My husband took me for a trip to Bunnings and I got a cheap 6" bench grinder. Took the wheels off and on one side I have a stitched calico wheel and on the other side, an unstitched. I must admit that I don't use it much as it makes such a fine powder that I can only use it outside ... and then it's either too hot/cold/wet. One day when I have a lot of polishing ....
